That's what popped into my mind. Rent a sledge and a gang of wedges and split it into quarters.

Pick up Roy Underhill's video on classic chairmaking techniques. I happened to catch it on the tube a few months ago and it was a great segment; Lyle Wheeler demonstrates state of the art chairmaking (circa 1850) by making a spinning wheel. As I recall, he shows how to radial saw stock and shape it lickety split. Lyle says that his chairs will outlast any factory chair. That's what I would do... most people aren't that nuts :)
