Patsy's suggestion is a good one. There are also several products available just for removing adhesive, try your local automotive supply, or well stocked hardware paint department. However some of them are fairly potent, so read the label carefully and decide what level of toxicity you wish to deal with. But the technique posted by Patsy works well to saturate and soften the old residue with whatever you decide to use.
