A sponge won't automatically remove the water. You need some sort of dessicant, or a meterial which absorbs water. Silica gel does that, (and to some extent so does salt). You can buy silica gel at craft stores. It is used for drying flowers. Open a container and place the whole thing carefully inside the closed compartment, or split the contents of a package of this into two open plastic bags, and put one in the fore and the other in the aft storage areas. Insert and remove these carefully so they don't spill, and of course you don't want to shake the kayak and scatter this stuff inside.
