: Since it gets a LOT more exposure than a kayak, is there a lot of
: maintenance?
Hi there, David.
It's five years old now, and the top needs to be re-varnished. The sides are fine, though they were (repaired from a collision and) varnished three years ago. I still get folks coming up to me in parking lots asking, "Did you make that?"
Because I have a garage I can actually use for parking, the top doesn't get anywhere near the exposure a full-time outdoor rig would get. And, the climate hereabouts is comparatively mild. On the other hand, out on the road it is subjected to high winds, vibration and flying debris. I'm pleased with how it has held up, particularly as it was my rookie project.
In some places along the middle of the middle and rear 'ribs' some white spots have appeared; my guess is that these are either tell-tales from the accident or maybe even poor glassing technique. They are not wide-spread, though, and I'm not yet concerned that the structure is weakened.
