I would agree with Lee that the #1 culprit is inadequate "cheek support", but too high/sharp a seat edge can really be a bad secondary cause of numbness or soreness.

A tight cast seat is way too restrictive. I cast mine over a sand mold, which didn't conform quite so tightly. I got good "butt dimples" for lots of cheek support, and also didn't have a tight wedge formed between my thighs. There is a moderate mound in the completed seat, though, so I have decent upper leg support when edging my boat. It's low enough, though, that my upper leg can slip past it when I want to balance brace.
