640 x 480 is generally large enough to show good detail on the BBS, but small enough that it doesn't cause bandwidth problems for your server.

For multiple images on a website, I go to about 200 x 150, especially if it will get viewed a lot. Clicking on the image brings up a 640 x 480 image, if someone wants to see more detail.
