Lots of good ideas here. What I've been doing is using my hand plane and a straight edge. Set the straight edge on the board - find the high spots - plane them down - recheck - and continue. My straightedge is 6' long, but as someone pointed out, as long as the strip is constant thickness, a little wave (like a 32nd or so) every 6 feet is no big deal.
