In Response To: Thinning elastomer? (Wayne)

: Thanks, Rick. So, you didn't thin the first, and I assume you didn't thin the
: second either? Just want to make sure here.

make a trip to the hardwaqre store today (menards) and was looking at the elastomeric roofing coatings, and discovered that there were several products there, which were of different thicknesses. ( viscosities)

One was a "trowel" grade elastomeric patching material which I assume would be MUCH thicker than the nearby can of "Brush" grade of roof coating material. The directions for the patching material suggested using it in thicknesses up to 1/4 inch thick, and backed that with an expected coverage of only 7 square feet per gallon at 1/4 inch thickness. The paint-like roofing coating I had previously used would take dozens of coats to achieve a thickness like this.

I would assume that if you had the patching material you might want to thin it considerably so that it could be spread in a thick caot with a brush, while if you have the coating material you would not need to thin it, but minimum of two coats would be suggested. Leave the boat out in the hot sun so it will cure. It needs the heat and the UV.

Also saw a new material (or at least new to me) which was an elastomeric acrylic roof coating which dries clear. Seemed like an interesting material to use over a colored fabric. Actually two materials, as this was also in a trowel and a brush grade. Water cleanup and fairly quick drying, too.

Hope this helps.
