My Etrex Legend has worked perfectly for me when using it in my yak. That said... I think everyone else with experience with the Garmin will agree that it drops out in heavy tree cover.

I didn't realize that the Magellan would be any better until I raced in an adventure race last month where we were required to carry a GPS unit with us. A Magellan. The GPS was to be used in case of emergencies and for later downloading and posting of our chosen routes. The race took us through the densest swamp I've ever been in (area was later referred to as Swamp Hell) and to my amazement the Magellan never missed a beat.

With my experience with both brands and because I do a lot of hiking and swamping in heavey tree cover I now want to trade in my Garmin for a Magellan.
