Kyle,

I have entered an adventure race for this upcoming summer at Minaki(in NW Ontario). It's a 2 day race, no GPS's allowed, the orienteering part is map and compass only.
I have never done an adventure race before so I don't really know what to expect. The only info we are given is that it will involve hiking, mtn biking, canoeing/kayaking, rock climbing/rapelling(which I have never done and will be taking a course on this winter). The maps and checkpoints for the race are given out the morning that the race begins. I used to do triathlons, but that was 4 kids ago, I'll have to work on the cardio and lose 5-10 lbs before the race.
From what I have heard, the race last year had some awful trekking through bog/swamp and the portage on the paddling leg was murder. Sounds like a great time to me :D

Thanks for your response.

Ken

: My Etrex Legend has worked perfectly for me when using it in my yak. That
: said... I think everyone else with experience with the Garmin will agree
: that it drops out in heavy tree cover.

: I didn't realize that the Magellan would be any better until I raced in an
: adventure race last month where we were required to carry a GPS unit with
: us. A Magellan. The GPS was to be used in case of emergencies and for
: later downloading and posting of our chosen routes. The race took us
: through the densest swamp I've ever been in (area was later referred to as
: Swamp Hell) and to my amazement the Magellan never missed a beat.

: With my experience with both brands and because I do a lot of hiking and
: swamping in heavey tree cover I now want to trade in my Garmin for a
: Magellan.

: Kyle
