: different styles. The wood strip kit. A wood panel kit and one that
: stitches togeather. This would be my first attempt to build a kayak.
Daniel,
Definitely browse all the available web sites by the people who are building kayaks. I have a ton of them bookmarked (got many of them through people's messages and links on this BBS)and I still visit them. When I first started searching the web I was amazed at how much information there is available. Not only did that play a factor in what type of kayak I would build, but also the model. Even bigger was learning some of the tricks these guys have been so gracious to share with everyone. I would be more than happy to e-mail you all my links if you'd like.
Every aspect of my first building project (ongoing now) was planned based on the messages here and the kayak links that I have visited. I chose a stitch and glue because I felt it more closely matched my abilities at this time. My decisions were relatively easy though because I am a complete newbie to the building process and the sport in general. I have only paddled sit on tops and then only a few times. Money unfortunately was my deciding issue. I could not even afford a kit at this time so building from scratch became my aim. Also my setup had to be done cheaply so I have been somewhat slowed by my working environment (I have no garage or shop). All things considered though I am chugging along just fine. I worked yesterday stitching the pieces together and by the time Dec. 1 rolls around I should have the hull glued and ready for glassing.
I have found links to everything I need for this process...
--Links to building sites for the exact model I am building
--Links to making a spray skirt, hand pump and a greenland style paddle
--Links to information leading to my choice of wood and epoxy for the project
--Links for making my own seat, back rest, and installing foot braces.
I figure that I will do all of this for less than $500 (less than a typical kit). Now all I have to do is take some beginner courses and start getting some paddling experience.
So whatever your abilities and choice this is the right place to be and to pick up good information. Good luck.
