I like western red cedar. Be very picky when choosing your stock. You want clear, vertical grain (CVG) wood with grain that runs straight from one end to the other. In my experience, only 2-3% of a stack of 2x4's is likely to be suitable. You can also buy a 4x4 and resaw it on your table/band saw when you get it.
