It really depends on your stripping pattern. I have used 5/4" boards at full width in areas that don't require much bending. The wider strips also aid in achieving a more uniform color.

The wider strips do not look "funney" with the narrower 3/4" strips.

You may want to keep a number of your 5/4" strips full width.

The two darker shades on this deck are done in 5/4" western red cedar.

The lighter cedar is 3/4" white cedar and once wetted out displayed a lot of color variations. The lightest color is bass wood.
