Whipping is a specific knot (wrap) used to hold the ends of lines so they don't unravel. It's not made up of half-hitches. Here's a link. As an alternative to whipping, I've used some goop they sell at marine stores that you dip the end of the line into. I'ts like that liquid grip stuff you can dip tools into to form a plastic grip. Stays pliable and soaks into the threads real good.
