In terms coming up with your own design, I'll share what I have been doing...

I bought plans for the King a couple months ago, but I have been thinking about deck designs for quite a while (but I still haven't made my mind up!). As I think about what I've been doing, I come up with 3 things.

1. I have been reading this board for about a year now and I keep a file with deck designs that I like. I don't intend to copy any of these, but they are great inspirations - both for designs and to keep the end point in mind (it will get finished and it will look great)

2. I have a sketch book I use for my woodworking/carpentry projects. I have been sketching deck designs in there and I must have over 50. A couple of them actually look decent. I will sketch bad ideas just to see if they lead to a good one.

3. Lately, I have been looking at the graphics on the sides of vehicles and RV's. They have a lot of different geometric patterns that are a great source of ideas. In fact, my latest favorite is a variation of a graphic I saw on the side of a pickup truck.

I have bought my wood and have half the strips cut, so I am going to have to start zeroing in on a concept soon!
