: Folks,

: I'd contacted Shawn privately with the following questions as I try to
: resolve "personal fitting" the cockpit of the Storm I'm
: building. He suggested that the questions and discussion are likely to be
: of general interest, so here it is

: Thought I'd run some of the measurements of the Storm past you to get an
: idea of what you think in terms of cockpit size and how approach adding
: a recess.
:
: The foredeck height is 12-3/4", rear is 10". One has to go pretty far
: back to find a form at the 9" level: it's about 2' back from the cockpit
: to the 9-1/2" level, and 4' to 9".

9" was an arbitrary number on my part--don't get too fixed on that. You're somewhat constrained by your deck height. You'll never easily make a 7" coaming height on a 10" deck.

With an aft deck height of 10", I think you could reasonably hit 9" or 9.5" top of coaming height.

Let's look at doing an extended "Roller's Recess" ala the Redfish King.

: The designed cockpits are ovals
: (keyhole?) with a fairly narrow profile towards the front - probably
: decent support for the knees if lower. There are two sizes as designed:
: 16 x 29 and 16-1/2 x 31. The boat has a 22" beam.

Do you own any sprayskirts? If not, I'd think the 16 ½" x 31" cockpit (these are inside dimensions, right, or at least the dimension of the outside of the coaming riser-not the lip?) would be easiest to find a skirt for.

: As far as my own measurements, I'm 5'9"+, weigh about 180, 16" hips, and
: have short legs ~31" inseam with shoes, measured the way bicyclists do
: (~30" without). I just went down and measured my girlfriend's boat, a
: 14' Impex Mystic. I fit into it comfortably but snugly, though I
: haven't had it out in the water. It's a 21" beam, foredeck 11.5", rear
: 9", cockpit 16" x 30" oval with thigh hooks.

That's a GREAT starting point. (Especially since it's a close fit) What do you like, and what don't you like about your fit in that boat? We'll work backwards from there. If it's a little tight, you're probably okay, as a 1 ¼" higher deck will give you some more thigh room. (is it tight in the thighs, or too narrow in the seat?)
