He's probably used to seeing folks using oil-based finishes. This stuff you had was latex-based, right?

I think Mike Hanks thinned his first coat on his test patch 50% with water, then full strength for subsequent coats.

Worth trying.

BTW, what are your plans for your skin seam? I may find myself building a folder and skinning it as you have, then spending some "head scratching" time deciding on how and where I want to put a zipper and/or lacing.
