More air is never a problem. For a complete shop, you really need a machine capable of at least 700 CFM at 9-10" SP, depending on your layout. The Jet DC650 wont give you this. The Grizzly might. Look for a 14" impeller with at least a 2HP motor. Ignore all the other data about the collector you are purchasing - it's the fan that counts.

In fact, any of the home DC models have insufficient data provided with them to make a good decision, but that's a continuing b--ch on the WOOD board for me.

The very best thing to do, if your budget allows, is to pony up the $$ for a decent fan. A cyclone is easy to build, and ductwork can be done piecemeal, or cheaply and upgraded as budget allows. But that fan will never do more than it is capable of on the day you purchase it. Take a look at Grainger, they have some belt-drive industrial fans that are in the same price range as a Woodsucker or an Onieda. It would be more work for you, but in the long run a much better system.

Review the tool CFM requirements that AAF gave me, and I gave Bill Pentz to put on his page at the link elsewhere in this thread. They are the real mccoy. For example, a 12" planer needs 700 CFM, NOT the 350 that any of the hoods on the tools are designed for. If you ever want a drum sander, you'll need at least 700 CFM. 900-1000 is better. Buy the fan NOW that will handle it. Or you'll be buying another fan later. While you are there, play with the spreadsheet on duct layout. Email me with any questions you might have, I wrote it.

Consider the ramifications of venting the cleaned air outside - some heat loss, and 100% filtration efficiency at ZERO microns. And no upfront cost for filters. Dont listen to anybody tell you that the cheezy 30-micron bags will protect your health - they pump the most damaging particles right back into the shop for you to breathe. Up until the energy crisis, it was illegal to recirculate the air, no matter how you filtered it.

: need to buy a dust collector and I think the jet 650 fits the bill, any
: comments? yea or nea. small shop one tool at a time. cant ever imagine
: running more then one.
