I was lucky in choosing an aniline dye color that make the Durhams match the wood pretty well. The wood darkens when wetted out. The putty is dark when first applied then lightens when sanded and darkens back when wetted.

The staple holes in the cedar that I used darkened where it was crushed by the staples. So in matching wood color I had to decide to match the wood or the darker staple ring. I matched the wood. A perfect color match is not that necessary since the staple holes are going to show no matter what you do. Make some test strips.
