In Response To: Material: Wear strip (Don)

: After a full summer of using my wood kayak I am ready to do some repairs for
: the next season. I have some wear on the keel line at the stern and bow
: ends. I was thinking of mixing some fine sand with epoxy to apply on these
: worn edges. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this or if there is
: something else that would help to minimize the wear in these areas. Thanks
: for the help.

If you just want to paint on a scratch resistant stripe, aluminum powder or graphite powder are other common ingredients that toughen your epoxy.

Why not lay down a 1 or 2 inch strip of glass cloth, too? that gives some physical thickness which can be scratched, and then sanded smooth, or even sanded off, and replaced or reinforced after next season.
