: Does anyone have any recommendations for places to get cedar (and maybe some
: accent hardwoods) in Washington state? I'm about to start building the
: 16'5" Storm LT, buut don't have a good setup to make my own strips.
Ethan,
It's in your best interest to find a saw and router and cut your own strips. The Rockwell tablesaw I used cost me $40 and a cheap Craftsman router was $20 with a small router table, both found at garage sales. Another $40 for the bead/cove bits and around $10 for a thin kerf 7-1/4" sawblade.
A few reasons I think it's important to cut your own strips:
- Wood here is cheap (if not free)
- Wood strips are expensive
- It takes less than a day to cut and router all the strips
- You can even cut enough for two or three boats at no extra charge
- You can be very selective of the wood you purchase
- Shop for exotic woods for accent strips
- Cut to the exact thickness that you want to use
- Create narrower strips for more bendablity
- Create wider strips, if desired
- Bundle your strips together, exactly how they came off the board, for uniform color/grain
- Wood species/quality/possiblities are endless
If you have any way of renting or purchasing these tools, the strips you create will be uncompromised. Just my 2 cents. And if you're married, this project gives you the reason you need to buy more tools.
