Don,
I have one in my shop and it does work well. However, I don't think it is a substitute for a vaccum on the sander. You're going to breath that dust before it makes its way to the air filter. If you really hate having that hose trailing your sander make sure the shop is sealed off from the rest of the house and make sure you use a good quality respirator. Don't take it off until you've allowed plenty of time for the filters to clear the air. Even so, you will be exposed to much more dust as you later stir up what has settled out of the air onto the floor, tools, lumber, etc. It's much better to not let it get into the air in the first place. Sorry if this sounds preachy--I find myself getting more and more sensitive to wood dust.
