I think 1" 1/4x20. I plan to drill out the hole and place a nut and washer across the top of the rail (for Yakima). If you do it this way, you'll need the stud to be the length of the thickness of the rail plus any washer/nut combination you use. There is enough room to move up to a larger diameter stud if you want. 3/8" may fit without drilling into the top of the rail. Since Yakima's use 1/4x20 screws, I assumed this size would be strong enough. If you want me to verify the size, I can let you know tonight.
