I have a Delta air cleaner in my small workshop. I believe it's rated for 99% removal down to 0.5 micron particles. When sanding I still use a mask on my face and a shop vac on the sander, both with 0.5 micron filters. Like some others said, I feel the air cleaner is not a substitute for the vacuum hose but one component of your overall dust control system. I keep the air cleaner running for a while after I'm done doing dusty work so hopefully when other family members later pass through my shop they won't be exposed to harmful dust.

To prepare for a varnish job I'm doing today, last night I vacuumed the shop, went around every surface with compressed air to stir up residual dust, and ran the air cleaner for a long time after. A question I have is how do you know when the air is really clean since you can't see the smallest particles?

I found the air cleaner especially useful when doing renovations in my house to capture residual dust.

I'm ordering a good vortex and filter dust collector soon to collect stuff at the source - sick of cleaning up!
