: Hi Ken,
: Thanks for your input. I know the pleasant odor of cedar having milled miles
: of it for strips on previous boats. This stuff has a very strong odor when
: cut, that is not so pleasant. If redwood has little or no odor, it must be
: something else or just cedar heartwood that is very dark?

: thanks again,

It sounds like Redwood to me Larry.

Redwood has an acrid kind of scent to it. Kinda burns the nose a little. Some folks even get an irritation on the skin from the dust.

If you got some redwood with that tight of grain, you picked up some old redwood. Most of what you get now-a-days is very open, loose grain. I'd hang onto that stuff! Maybe somebody had it sitting around and got it mixed up in a cedar pile. ??

The 2" x 4" cedar boards I recently picked up for paddle stock look very mush like redwood, have tight grain and are very uniform in color. But when cut, they definitely smell like Cedar. No Doubt.

I'd guess redwood!
