Off Topic: Cape Cod Canal

Took the bus from Hyannis to Providence to catch my plane to Seattle after spending Thanksgiving on the Cape with my Mother. As we went along the canal, I thought it would be fun to paddle there. I read a newspaper article this morning that indicated that kayaks are not welcome in the canal, that you need permission.
What's the scoop?
