: Took the bus from Hyannis to Providence to catch my plane to Seattle after
: spending Thanksgiving on the Cape with my Mother. As we went along the
: canal, I thought it would be fun to paddle there. I read a newspaper
: article this morning that indicated that kayaks are not welcome in the
: canal, that you need permission.
: What's the scoop?
There was an article a few years back in "Atlantic Coastal Kayaker" by a guy who paddled the east
coast using only a Rand McNally road atlas. Yes, a highway atlas, not sea charts.
This guy got into all sorts of trouble (surprise, surprise!) one of which was getting hauled out of the Cape
Cod canal. Seems the officials only allow powered craft through. After the officials stopped saying bad things
to him, this guy and his kayak ended up getting a ride on some kind person's boat through the canal.
Between currents and converging boat wakes it would make for some interesting paddling. I guess
this is why they don't want us there.
All the best,
Rob
