We were going to do a club trip through, but it never materialized. Here's what I know about kayaking the canal:
1) It is restricted to motorized craft only. Sailboats must be under power when passing through.
2) It is possible to get permission to paddle the canal, but it must be scheduled with the controlling authority (Army Corps of Engineers) so they can arrange a motorized escort. I'm not sure if they'll do this for an individual, but apparently, they will do it for organized groups.
3) Timing is critical, as the currents can hit 5 knots in some sections.
4) A paddle trip would be best done during the off season. Not only would kayaks be a potential navagational hazard, but the heavy boat traffic generates nasty, wakes and unpredictable waves. Yeah, it could be fun, but not when you're hustling to get through between peak current cycles.
That's it in a nutshell.
