I can recommend The Ashley Book of Knots written by Clifford Ashley.

If you want more knots you can take a look at

Dont get too involved in these knots.
A nice christmas gift to the young ones are a couple of 8mm ropes(floating anchorline), about one meter each and different colour. Along with them a book on knots.
