Excelent advice from all the posters. I'll also add a reading suggestion: The Complete Guide to Sharpening by Leonard Lee (of Lee-Valley fame). This is an excellent book on the subject describing in detail everything from angles for various tools and purposes, steel types, abrasives and, of course how to get that perfect edge. As they say: it makes the perfect Christmas present.
