They come in different densities of foam. The Makita brand countour pad is fairly dense (better than the one I got from Sears). The Carborundum brand pad I got was fairly dense also, but it didn't have the 8 dust holes.
Know matter which pad you get, it will change the inertia of the pad. A random orbit sander will tend to spin more with the pad on, but under load (while you are sanding) it shouldn't spin any more than it will without the pad.
