Just a thought, but several folks have built kayaks for under $600 and down as low as $400 or so. I would think you could come in much lower than $1,000 for a canoe. Less of most of the things that go into a kayak! More wood, which is probably the cheapest part of any boat. No decks though, so maybe not. No deck to glass under and over, so there's a big savings. No coaming, hatches and so on.... Much less work and equates to less material. Buying from Raka for glass and resin, and using cheaper grades of wood will keep mat. costs down as well.

4 paddles may run a couple bucks extra though. You ARE making the kids help paddle aren't you??
