If it is epoxied on, you might try the heating method to loosen the epoxy. Shawn used an iron to undo a ply scarf joint successfully. Slow and steady application of the heat should do it. You would need to be careful not to scorch the wood, unless you plan on painting later anyway. I think you could slowly pry it off. Might be worth a shot before resorting to planes and saws.
