The timber was all just offcuts from a timber yard. It is almost all Western Red Cedar. The strip along the sheerline is Radiata Pine. The pattern on the deck was made using the darkest and lightest strips in the stack. The light strips looked like WRC except that I have never seen any as light as those strips. Since it was all scrap timber, I couldn't be sure what it would look like until I started to saw it and dress it. As it turned out, I could not have asked for better colours. I will post a couple of other pictures taken during construction to show the colours better.
I will have to build another sea kayak soon because this one was built for my son. If Nick will hurry up and get some more details and pictures of the Night Heron double on his web site, I might be able to persuade my wife that it should be the next boat on the assembly line. In five days time, I will retire after 34 years of teaching, so I should be able to find the time to build a double.
I'm sorry the picture didn't match the description of the weather conditions. The best I can offer at present is a shot taken in a mild swell just off the beach at Tuross Head. (about 300km south of Sydney)
