I have never had a problem with the durability of minicell foam unless something sharp is involved.
Colouring is easy. Just use inlays of different coloured foam. You could even put a design in your seat. Those cheap backpacking mattresses available at discount sports stores come in every conceivable colour you could want. Go to the link below for the how to:
