Sounds like a spade bit -- good for quick rough holes in 2 x 4 framing lumber.

FWIW, I made more than my share of wrong-tool errors during my shooting star project. In fact I developed the practice of buying the right tool AFTER I had fumbled through with the wrong one(s). To wit, only after the boat was in the water did I buy a complete set of brad point bits, a good square, T bevel, micrometer...

When I read your post, I was reminded of some of the ugly mistales I made; It is amazing how minor they seem once the boat is in the water. ("I was upset about THAT?")
