I used the 1/4 inch luan for my Mill Creek 13. I only used it on the hull panels. I had no problems getting them to come to the proper shape. The hull has too tight a radius for the 1/4 inch luan I had on hand, so I picked up a sheet of the thin 3 or 4 mm marine grade stuff that CLC sells. Thinner luan would also work.
Buy the nicest sheets of luan you can find on the pile. Once you get them home and cut out your panels, you can see the voids by looking at the edges. Fill voids with epoxy. You can also try the trick of shining a bright light on the other side of the sheet and looking for voids that way.
My kayak turned out fine. It might not be as beautiful as some of the others out there, but it floats and paddles well, and is lighter and stronger than the plastic boats.
Also, if you want to save money, go with Raka epoxy. It's good stuff, and cheap.
