Hi Chip -
I paddled a Mariner Max with the sliding seat and pegs and will be installing something like it in my Cirrus. The system REALLY works well. The Mariner system is elegantly simple:
~ The seat and seat back are mounted on a flat and thick plate of fiberglass (instead of plywood) about 1/8" thick. This bottom plate slides between 2 fiberglass rails anchored to the bottom of the hull, similar to a sliding hatch on a boat.
~ The pegs slide in t-channel like we're used to seeing but are attached to the seat by way of 2 aluminum extension straps. You adjust footpeg length by way of adjustment holes on the straps that attach by wingnuts to the outside of the seat. So the footpeg rails are used as nothing more than sliding guides for the pegs.
~ To slide the seat fore and aft, you simply take your feet off the pegs, grab a handhold on the seat down between your legs and skootch forward or backward while you "unweight" the seat. Then paddler weight keeps the seat in place.
