I believe you want to pinch with the lashing from gunwale to gunwale about 18 inches from the end. Do this before starting the kerf cutting.
Morris also recommends working with the top of the gunwale if you do much of a pinch so it does not visibly recurve downward. Personally, I just did not pinch enough to cause a noticable recurve.
