The best thing to do is just ignore them. But, it's kind of a fun challenge. I would pick up that steel rod and shape one end so it fits in your hand drill. Soften it with a torch (out in the driveway) and then chew away at the softened steel with a hack saw and file until it fits. Then I'd epoxy (or braze) a nasty-sharp piece of metal to the business end; like a paddle bit or maybe just a large wood screw; soften the paddle bit with a torch before trying to cut it. Put the 5' drill bit in the drill and slowly work it through the wood.
