My tip here would be to not do as Nick has suggested. He notes that one should cut out the hole in the form a full 2x4 when the board used is much smaller. I did this with my Auk and getting the little squares I used on the strongback not to slip through the holes was too hard. For my guillemot, I gave myself about an eighth of an inch of wiggle room in each dimension and the job seemed to go more smoothly.

I like your idea of toothpicks! I had taped a string from form to form to check on alignment, and then used the first strip to actually get the alignment really right.
