Here's a tip some might find useful when filling staple holes using Durham's water putty. It's a good filler but the problem is getting it to match cedar stripping. I found two inexpensive solutions, both water based, mix easily into the Durham's, and do not adversly affect the hardening or curing properties.
First, I used Dap water based Plastic Wood in "Red Woods" color. Look for the "water cleanup formula". The 4 ounce plastic jar is plenty. Add a small amount to the Durham's after mixing, a little at a time, until it approximates the color needed. Takes some experimenting, it will dry lighter.
Next, which turned out to work the best, is powdered RIT DYE. I used "Cocoa brown", at about $1.40 a box (one box will last you the next ten years). Mix about a tablespoon of Durhams and add a dab of dye powder... it only takes a few crystals. When you get a light brown, fill all the lighter wood. Add another bit of dye powder, fill the next wood tone in your boat, work up to the darker woods. Works like a charm. Again, dries somewhat lighter.
