Spring for the next higer up models, the 565 or 580 if you can swing it. The difference is in the amount of snipe you'll get (or not get) on the end of each board that passes through the planer. The newer (and higher) priced models all do a better job of eliminating this nuisance. The 540 should do ok for you if price is really important, but you'll likely more than make up for it with all of the little chunks of wood you have to cut off and burn over the life of the tool.

I have the older, original Delta 12" and I have to plan on loosing 3" off of each end of a board due to snipe. Sometimes I get lucky, but if I don't plan on it I usually regret it. I'm going to trade up to the 580 one of these days.

Regardless of which way you go you'll love having a planer if you do any amount of serious woodworking.
