If you wax the line the knots will stick like glue. I've been using Tandy Leather's artificial sinew, which is waxed nylon. It works great!

Tip: Figure out which finger is getting the bulk of the damage from pulling the knots tight, and wrap some athletic tape around that spot. The hole in my finger from lashing over the Thanksgiving weekend is finally healed. Should have heeded my own advice.
