It happens that not only have I built two Waters Dancing Lightenings (17 ea.) but I live a few streets away from the shop. The Lightening 17 and 14 are similar in design so I think I can say a little to help you. I have paddled a Lightening 17 for two years now. It looks sleek due to the narrow multi-chine design and slices through the water easily. It tracks very well and has a very neutral design with enough cargo space for a month of food and equipment. I took this kayak on a 13 hour paddle last year and had no problems wiht numb-buttitis. The seat is well designed for comfort. I have not rolled one yet so I can't tell you much about that aspect of the design but it is very stable. She handles well on turns. The Lightening 17 is fun to play around with bridge pylons, I can imagine the Lightening 14 is even more fun. The first 17'er I built took 4 months to completion, the second one took only two months with extra work for modifications. The manual is very easy to follow with thorough explanations and excellent backup photography. Donnie (owner) answered well all questions I had with great advice for potential problems. I think you would find the 14 a piece of cake to build and a breeze to paddle. Check out the link to some of my pics. If you have any other questions just email me.
