Hello all,

I have been lurking here for about three months now and have just gotten started on our One Ocean Cape Ann Double. It will be our first kayak after renting and doing group thingies.

My first (of many I'm sure) question is...has any one out there used old growth Douglas Fir as part of the kayak. I have some that is beautifully tight and straight grained. It is at least 50 (yes fifty) years since it has seen any weather or moisture. I'm considering keel, shear line and accents. The rest will be WRC. My research on wood indicates that is has a pretty good strength to weight ratio, better than many popular hardwoods. Oh by the way I also have a chunk of air dried Black Walnut. It is short but beautiful wood, which will be used for deck accents.
