: O'boy, does this sound like fun ... and not only learning how to build a boat
: but learning a new language.
: If you guys are talking about strongbacks then I have to assume you are
: talking about the early stages of building. Let me ask an almost related
: question. I have ordered the book that seems to be the bible for this kind
: of construction. The book includes plans and info for building three types
: of kayak. On the order page it suggests that I also purchase the plans for
: the kayak I want to build. Is this necessary? Are the plans in the book
: merely informational?
: I recently discovered this website/forum and trust me, I will be watching and
: learning. Meanwhile, thanks for any help and hope you all have a great new
: year.

Hey Bill,

I bought a copy of Nicks book and found that Nick really accomplished his goal of providing a book with all the information that one would need to build a beautiful boat. I built the Guillemot strictly from the book except for a few questions that I presented to the very knowledgable people here on the board.

I've added a link to some pics of this yak that I built for my wife. I lofted the form plans from the table of offsets and milled my own strips from various woods purchased locally. (All from the book.)

I have also purchased a set of plans from Nick for his Guillemot L design. I didn't want to do the loafting this time. My wife suggested, on the first one, that I "do everything from scratch" so I,d understand more about the process. To this idea, I very quickly agreed since she already knew that there would be more than one boat. Now if I can just find the time to get started - - one funeral to go to today and one tomorrow!

Also, feel free to mention other sources of info, builders, sites, names, or whatever, from which someone else may gain knowledge as well as any questions, thoughts, tries or failures.

This forum is very open, honest and clean and through the efforts of all involved, it can remain that way. Nick has provided a great service to the boat building community where we all can enjoy the building and paddling experiences of others.

Happy Building.

Charles.
