I had some really dark cedar that I wanted to use on my deck and contrast it with something light. I had some douglas fir (not the 50 yr old old growth that you have, but run-of-the-mill Home Depot's finest). I used it on the entire rear deck of my Great Auk and it came out nice. The picture below shows the result.
