I've built a few "recovery" kayaks of my own design that are fun to play in, and also, given their short size and quick build time, are fun to make. I would be careful of using them in surf or whitewater, however, as they could collapse around you under that kind of pressure. They do make great play boats for kids as well, as children seem to enjoy spinning around in them more than long distance travel!
