I use Lee Valley's GF2002. It fills any small gaps, dries to almost the same colour as cedar and doesn't set up too quickly. A short while ago I did a test using maple and tried to break a joint after clamping for one hour. The wood broke, the joint held.

Actually, everybody uses some epoxy as a glue
